IELTS CBT Writing

How to practise IELTS CBT Writing: start with timed keyboard drafts.

After mainland IELTS moves fully to computer delivery, the useful adjustment is not memorising a CBT overview. It is changing how you write: finish Task 1 and Task 2 on a keyboard, read prompts and charts on screen, use the live word count, and submit a complete draft within 60 minutes.

CBT is not a new scoring system. Practise input, screen reading, and pacing first, then use one main-blocker diagnosis to decide the next revision action.

The policy context is short

chinaielts.org states that mainland IELTS stops paper-based testing and moves fully to computer delivery from 2026-09-01; IELTS for UKVI moved earlier from 2026-07-01. Existing paper-test scores remain usable within their normal validity period.

The writing action changes, not the criteria

Officially, computer-delivered and paper-based IELTS keep the same content, question types, difficulty, assessment dimensions, and scoring criteria. What affects performance is whether you can plan, develop, and check under screen-and-keyboard conditions.

Real IELTS essay diagnosis

First of all, technology saves a lot of time in our daily life. For example, when we go to a new place, we do not need to ask people or remember the way, we just use the map App on the phone. Besides, we can pay by phone, buy things online and talk with friend…

What actually changes in CBT Writing

For learners around Band 6.0-7.0, the risk is usually not harder questions; it is a mismatch between practice and the test interface. A handwritten draft does not prove you can finish a timed keyboard draft, and reading a chart on paper does not prove you can quickly find the main features on screen.

  • Input moves to the keyboard: spelling, capitalisation, punctuation, and editing speed all affect completion.
  • Task 1 becomes screen-based chart reading: practise finding main trends on screen before writing the overview and comparisons.
  • Live word count constantly shows length, but it does not fix thin development or task drift for you.
  • Copy, paste, and deletion are easier, but they can also scramble paragraph logic; keep structure visible while practising.

This week: practise each essay as a CBT action

Do not write long untimed paper plans and then slowly type the answer later. A closer routine is to read, plan, type, and check on the computer from the start, then stop when time is up. You can practise Task 1 and Task 2 separately, but full practice still needs Writing-test pacing.

  • Task 2: write a complete timed keyboard draft in 40 minutes; if it stays under 250 words, record where it stalled.
  • Task 1: read the chart on screen for 3-4 minutes, write the overview first, then select and compare data.
  • Use live word count, but do not pad empty sentences; length is a completion signal, not development quality.
  • After each draft, choose one main blocker and use the next draft to test whether that action improved.

Do not reduce CBT practice to typing drills

Typing speed matters, but IELTS Writing still assesses Task Response, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy. Useful IELTS CBT writing practice connects input speed with writing quality: did you finish on time, answer the task, develop body paragraphs, and keep sentence control stable?

  • If you cannot finish, separate slow typing from slow planning and from getting stuck while developing body paragraphs.
  • If word count is fine but scores do not move, the issue is probably response, development, cohesion, or language control rather than the keyboard.
  • If you edit constantly, check whether you are thinking sentence by sentence instead of planning each paragraph’s job first.

After one draft, run one main-blocker diagnosis

CBT changes the submission environment; improvement still comes back to the draft itself. After one timed computer draft, submit the full prompt and essay to Banfen Writing and check the one issue worth fixing first: a missing Task 1 overview, a Task 2 body paragraph with examples but no explanation, or cohesion that makes the position unstable.

  • Read the main blocker and essay evidence first instead of chasing one AI band estimate.
  • Turn feedback into the next revision action: fix the overview, add explanation, stabilise the position, or control sentence errors.
  • Write the next draft under CBT timing again and verify whether that action has entered your writing process.

FAQ: preparing Writing after mainland IELTS moves fully CBT

The common questions are whether CBT is harder, whether scoring changes, whether paper practice still helps, and whether slow typing will consume the Writing test.

  • Is CBT harder? Officially, content, question types, difficulty, and scoring stay aligned; the difficulty is whether you are used to screen reading, keyboard input, and timed checking.
  • Will scores change because of CBT? The criteria do not change. Your performance can change if you cannot finish, read charts slowly on screen, or edit in a messy way.
  • Should I still practise on paper? Paper can help with quick planning and review, but complete Task 1 and Task 2 drafts must regularly be timed on a computer.
  • What if typing is slow? First measure how many English words you can type steadily in 10 minutes, then practise a 40-minute Task 2 draft; if word count is enough but quality is weak, return to main-blocker diagnosis.

选择雅思写作批改或 AI 作文评分工具时,别只比较一个分数。更重要的是它能否指出主卡分点、引用原文证据,并给出下一步可重写的修改方向。

IELTS Writing time management
雅思写作时间分配通常建议 Task 1 约 20 分钟、Task 2 约 40 分钟,并预留检查重点错误。先把问题拆成一个卡分点、一条诊断证据和一个下一版重写目标。问题越小,重写越容易真正聚焦。把时间都花在开头或高级词上,会挤掉主体段展开和最后检查。先给 Task 1、Task 2、提纲和检查分配固定分钟数。
